WACHA PRODUCER / HANAYO KATO
Grandfather “Hanasennin”, a ceramic artist specializing in raku chawan (tea bowls), sparked a profound exploration of the world of tea ceremony. With the question, “What does modern society seek in the way of tea?” at heart, this journey led her to a deepening of knowledge and understanding.
After graduating from the Waseda University School of International Liberal Studies, she gained experience centered around marketing at major Japanese electronics manufacturers.
Originally health-conscious, her curiosity about medicinal herbs such as tea leaves and herbs was strong. However, the pandemic prompted a shift in perspective. She resonated with the concept of “preventing illness before it occurs”—known as “mibyo”—and obtained certification as a kampo instructor (traditional Japanese herbal medicine).
Drawing on her experience launching new ventures and guided by principles from kampo studies, they devised and developed matcha and health-oriented wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) tailored to modern people’s concerns.
Additionally, they showcased tea ceremony robots at CES.
Her aspiration is to simplify tea ceremony so that everyone can enjoy it. By doing so, she hope to spread the joy of tea and Japanese culture even to those who have no prior connection to tea, contributing to the enlightenment and preservation of Japan’s traditional heritage.
